Конференция в Риме «Преодоление ядерной опасности», в которой я участвовал вместе с М.С.Горбачевым, вызвала необычный для таких форумов отклик в прессе. Интервью в журнале «Тайм» характерно, среди прочего, тем, что слова участников, в том числе переведенные, фактически не редактируются. «Цена слова» довольно велика.

There’s more to leadership than you think

UPDATE: Добавлен русский вариант из «Российской газеты».

The concept of leadership so prized by Americans is difficult for Russians to grasp, even when the word is translated correctly.

It is more a cultural than a linguistic problem and needs clarifying. Translators and students of foreign languages are familiar with the problem of what the French call faux amis (translators’ false friends), words that have the same origin and often look and sound the same but mean different things in different languages. Examples include the English word anecdote and the Russian “anekdot” (a joke) or velvet—in Russian “velvet” stands for corduroy.

Before perestroika, the language of Soviet politics was dry, emotionless and often meaningless. Inevitably, in a freer environment the pendulum swung toward a more lively style. But much of the new liveliness has been of a peculiar kind. In the 1990s, politicians and the media took to borrowing words and phrases from the language of the criminal underworld. For example, the expression "turf war" was first used to describe gang disputes over territory and then migrated to politics and business.

I've been a translator and interpreter for almost 40 years now, and my fascination with “the untranslatable” has been growing all these years. Mind you, I am speaking of European languages, which are relatively similar. Compared to Piraha, the language of an Amazon tribe that has no concept of numbers or counting, Russian and English have a world in common.

The many colours of our world still always dazzle us

The recent election campaign in the US was so widely covered in the Russian media that almost everyone now seems to know what red states and blue states mean; some even know the meaning of purple, the battleground states.

Beaten to the punchline

Germaine Greer does not think men are the funnier sex. But they are better at banter, innuendo and clowning. So what's holding women back?
